Idolator Live-Blogs The "TRL" Finale: 1-800-DIAL-MTV, We Knew Ye When

Tonight brings us the finale of MTV's daily countdown show TRL, and MTV is pulling out a few stops to celebrate its end: A few live performances, a few interviews, a return to hosting duties by TRL OG Carson Daly. In some ways, this denouement was inevitable: The fizzy, sheeny, ever-expanding America that was epitomized by the rise of both the first Britney era and TRL some 10 years ago is all but over, what with a seemingly neverending bust ensuing and the concept of "popular music" being less popular than ever. But that doesn't mean we can't eulogize it, right? Full coverage begins after the jump. More »

KristeenYoung And Patrick Stump Bring The Drama

KristeenYoung* has teamed up with Fall Out Boy mutton chop master Patrick Stump for the dramatic duet "That's What It Takes, Dear." Under the supervision of the super-awesome Tony Visconti, "Dear" rumbles and thunders its way over spiky pianos and low synths to its going-for-it conclusion. It's rather minimalist in arrangement, but big-sounding, which ain't easy. I hate to pigeonhole, but there's definitely a mid-period Tori Amos vibe here which is undeniable, particularly in its rhythmic construction. I don't consider this a bad thing at all, and I've got nothing against melodrama, particularly in music that might have an outside shot at going mainstream. Young sounds like she feels it, and Stump, with some smooth walkdowns, is a nice foil. In a world of Vivian Girls and Coathangers, I like to hear people that sound like they give two craps. I approve. I'm also rooting for Patrick Stump, who seems an affable fellow and provides a welcome counterbalance to the the garish pretty boys of Alternative Press covers.

Music Industry Trying To Rebrand "Election Day" As Something More Than An Arcadia Song

Today's Wall Street Journal story on how the entertainment industry is treating Election Day as "another retail holiday, when adults are sprung from work and kids are out of school—and presumably in stores" is full of cringeworthy moments—for starters, we have Brad Paisley calling his current tour The Paisley Party, which I thought was a weird Prince reference but is actually some "funny" political "joke" that I guess will mobilize all the graphic design-challenged types out there. But perhaps the best evidence that Fall Out Boy's decision to move the release of Folie A Deux from Nov. 4 to mid-December was a smart one comes from the excruciating Oklahoman butt-rockers Hinder. Phoenix To Host Greatest Concert Lineup Since The US Festival

I'm sure it's more due to the booking power of Clear Channel than the promotional talents of morning show idiots Johnjay and Rich, but this year's installment of KZZP's Phooson looks to be the greatest collection of talent ever. Sure, the concert has abandoned its original mission of bringing music to the gap between Phoenix and Tucson (get it? that's why it's called Phooson) and set up shop at an amphitheater in Phoenix. But when you look at the lineup, you'll realize that Casa Grande—the little town smack in the middle of the two bigger cities—couldn't have handled this much star power. More »

"Marmite Artists" Make Everyone Pucker Their Lips And Get In The Mood For A Row

Supermarket shelves in other parts of the world (and at certain specialty shops in the US) contain a food product called Marmite, which is basically a bread spread made out of yeast extract. I personally tried it when I was 16, after an Australian pen pal sent me a few packets, and my Cool Ranch and Domino's-trained palate found it absolutely repellent; I haven't tried it since, because the thought of doing so makes me shiver. But apparently it's pretty divisive in the UK, to the point that the product name is actually being used by some music-biz insiders to describe certain artists who have a love-'em-or-hate-'em appeal. The musical omnivores at Popjustice explain: "the phrase describes the sort of band or artist which divides opinion as strongly as the disgusting/delicious yeasty food product Marmite. It is not a phrase used to describe how good or bad something is—there's no value judgment involved." Popjustice says that Alphabeat, the Scissor Sisters, and Bob Dylan are all "Marmite artists"—although a shitty band being pushed by a publicist to no avail is not, so don't try it next time, publicists. Confused yet? Well, in keeping with our English-class form, the term is used in context after the jump! More »

Fall Out Boy's Folie A Deux, announced as "delayed" earlier today, is coming out Dec. 16: "Though this is not the date we had originally planned nor the optimal date according some demographic marketing analysis, we put our eight feet down told our label it must come out this year. We’re already bummed enough that Chinese Democracy is gonna beat us to release." Well, I wouldn't count on that yet... [petewentz.com]

Fall Out Boy Delay Album To See If Free Market, iTunes Survive Forthcoming U.S. Presidential Election

So there was a new Fall Out Boy record that was supposed to come out on the glorious day when American citizens elect their next president, allowing for big time emo commentary on the State Of Our World, Which Is Not Very Good. Something like that. I confess that ever since I quit Idolator-ing full-time I have somewhat lost track of the comings and goings of Maura's favorite band (Ed. second-favorite band after Nelson and the Instant Composers Pool, thank you) and since the VP debate, I've sort of tried to purposefully lose track of what's going on with the election. Anyway, that Fall Out Boy record is now notcoming out on Election Day because the band has realized it's a VERY IMPORTANT DAY for a world where bankers are about to start showing up to work in loincloths. Instead the album is coming out... well, the band isn't quite sure when it's coming out. But be assured that the delay is due to "reasons that suit [the band's] ideals and are unselfish" and will include an "extensive preorder campaign that will take into account the current state of our economy," possibly by including canned goods or a recycled mustard bottle full of unleaded with each purchase. The band members would also like you to know that, despite their on-record admissions of being decent-minded liberal humanists, they're not telling anyone to wear a specific campaign button, okay? Something Fishy Is Going On With Fall Out Boy's New Video

Fall Out Boy debuted their video for "I Don't Care" today, complete with cameos by Mark Hoppus, Spencer Pratt and Cobra Starship's Gabe Saporta. Except Pete Wentz, on his blog, said that it's not the exact version of the video they made: More »

Which News Item Will Cause Music Snobs To Complain Louder?

The one about the Hold Steady playing a couple of shows in Europe as a support act for Counting Crows, or the one about the new Cure single featuring remixes by 30 Seconds To Mars' Jared Leto, My Chemical Romance's Gerard Way, AFI's Jade E. Puget, and Fall Out Boy's Pete Wentz and Patrick Stump? I think it's a toss-up, although I have heard that there are a lot of Counting Crows fans lurking in the shadows out there... [AHN / NME]

The Half-Year In Review: Dave Grohl Owns Alt-Rock Airwaves (What Else Is New?)

Many people find it hard to tell the great from the godawful when it comes to 21st-century mainstream rock. To help figure out which is which, here's "Corporate Rock Still Sells," where Al "GovernmentNames" Shipley examines what's good, bad, and ugly in the world of rock and roll. This time around, he gives the year's rock charts a midway-mark overview. More »

According to MTV, T.I. and Fall Out Boy have recorded a track together for T.I.'s upcoming album. MTV describes the song as "somber and emotional, loaded with dramatic, crashing guitars, soaring strings and the King of the South's deeply personal lyrics, which detail the trials and tribulations he's endured over the past year." And Pete Wentz is throwing around The Nightmare Before Christmas as a reference point for the song. Let's hope this foray into hip-hop fares better than the last. [MTV]

Pete Wentz Determined To Remaster Parenthood

No matter how cool you are, or how many hoodies you own, parenthood is a pretty big deal. Sometimes it overcomes people in such a way that they feel compelled to make absurd analogies, such as "parenthood is like making a record," a tidy nugget of wisdom for you to sew onto your next throw pillow courtesy of soon-to-be dad Pete Wentz. "You're going to mix it for 18 years," he adds, further digging his own grave. More »
